Guest Post: Project Hail Mary Book Review by Ahaqir Ishaq

How is everyone’s week going so far? Good, I hope! We’ve got something new today on the bookish front, because for the first time I’m hosting a guest post! šŸ„³ After all, I’m here to spread the love about books and everything book-related, and that includes supporting other authors, readers and bloggers. šŸ„°

Our guest for today is Ahaqir Ishaq, who runs the book blog Booksofbrilliance and writes book reviews, recommendations and book related news.

Project Hail Mary Book Review by Ahaqir Ishaq

One of the best books Iā€™ve read so far this year has got to be Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It is a science fiction novel by the same author that wrote The Martian. Yes, the one that inspired the Matt Damon movie.

The plot of the novel is a simple one with a great twist. Ryland Grace wakes up and he does not remember anything at all. He uses all the clues around him to learn more about where he is and who he is. He does know that he is on a spacecraft that is flying in outer space.

Slowly over time, Grace regains back some of his memories and enough to remember why he is in a spaceship. He was sent along with two other astronauts to find out why this specific planet wasnā€™t affected by astrophage. It is an alien single-cell organism that is absorbing the energy of the sun, making the sun dimmer each time.

Earth has brought all of the top scientists together to tackle this new enemy but time might not be on their side. The sun has lost a lot of energy already and the world is already feeling the effects of it. By the time the spaceship reaches its destination, Earth will be much cooler than it has been in centuries.

With the weight of Earth on Graceā€™s shoulders, he must use every tool he can to solve this problem. But he has to face an unknown in space and a limited food and fuel supply. As he slowly regains his memory, he learns the truth of how he ended up on Project Hail Mary.

I have to say, even with a ā€œEarth is going to be wiped outā€ plot, I enjoyed this novel a lot. There is a lot of science, some fake and some real. Weir makes it sound like it may hold in court. What surprised me the most was the character development with amnesia being used as brilliantly as it was.

Weir is one of the best science fiction writers around and not many people can hold a candle to him. If you havenā€™t read any of his novels, then this is a great first novel. His writing has grown a lot in the past decade and I canā€™t wait to see what else he writes in the years to come.
